Frequently Asked Questions
A folded mailer is a printed piece that folds, seals, and mails without an envelope — the design itself becomes the mailer. Unlike a postcard, which gives you two sides to work with, a folded mailer opens up to reveal additional panels of content, giving you significantly more room to tell your story, showcase your products, walk a reader through a process, or build a case for your business. It's a self-contained marketing piece that travels through the mail and unfolds into something worth reading.
The most common options are the bi-fold, which creates four panels, and the tri-fold, which creates six panels. We also offer the Z-fold, gate fold, and accordion fold for projects that want a more distinctive format or a specific reveal sequence. Each fold style creates a different reading experience — a gate fold, for instance, builds anticipation by concealing the interior behind two cover flaps that open outward, while an accordion fold allows the piece to be extended into a single long panoramic display. If you're not sure which format suits your content, we're happy to talk it through.
A postcard is a powerful tool for a single focused message — a sale, an event, an offer. A folded mailer is the right choice when your message is bigger than a postcard can hold. If you need to introduce your business, explain a service, walk through a process, feature multiple products, or take a reader on a journey from problem to solution, a folded mailer gives you the space to do it properly. Some stories simply can't be told in two sides of a 4x6 card, and trying to squeeze them in produces cluttered, ineffective pieces. A folded mailer lets the story breathe.
Folded mailers must be tabbed or sealed with spots of glue along the open edges to process through USPS automated mail handling equipment — a loose, unsealed piece will not be accepted by the USPS. We handle tabbing and glue sealing as part of our mailing preparation process. Size, weight, and thickness must also fall within USPS specifications for the intended mail class. When you bring us a folded mailer project intended for mailing, we design the production process around those requirements from the start so there are no surprises at the post office.
